Aristid Lindenmayer was not a mathematician, but plant
biologist, who created a system of notation in 1968 as a formal model of
plant growth.
It has proven to be a remarkably diverse tool for exploring
many simple fractal models and it has been adopted as a convenient notation
for plant models, recreating many of the early curves, as well as being
a rich vein for exploring new fractal curves.
